I have created an MPEG file with Intervideo WIN DVD software which came
with my PC.
Now I want to format that file and put in on a DVD to play on home DVD
player. What do I do?

You get a DVD authoring program, and "author" the disc in that.

I can find no programs that make SVCD or VCD on my PC except Adobe

Is there a specific reason why you would want to make an SVCD or a VCD,
instead of a DVD? (Do you have a DVD burner? Or only a CD burner?)
See here for some tutorials and suggestions:

There might be some trick here where you have to rename the file from
"mymovie.mpg" to "mymovie.vob" before you burn it. Or even put the
VOB file inside a folder called "video_ts".

This is the easy button solution for you.....
for the formats you want it to play. You can get a cheap DVD player from
Walmart for about $40 that will play Divx, Xivd, Mpg and more. Then you
can just dump your files onto any old disk, shove it into the player and
just play it.
Again, this is the easy button solution. It ignores all discussions
about quality and such.

Hey, an Easy Button is often the solution that some of us are looking for!
Let's hear it for Easy Buttons!!!

I vote for Philips.
(1st claims DivX6 and Windows Media Support too, second has upscaling
and HDMI, third is an older version, if you want to save some money and
want to use S-Video, does not support DivX6)

Don't recall the exact model, but I bought a Phillips unit and its
played everything. Heck, I can even mix divx/xivd and mpg all on the
same disk. They even have one that has a USB input which sounds handy.
Its really handy to catch those Battlestar episodes if I miss one to
grab a quick torrent and just pop it in. Quality is very good on the xvids.

Yes, I've got the second one, the 5960, and if I wanted to get a
Battlestar episode from my PC to my DVD player, I could:
burn a DVD
burn a CD
put it on my little Kingston USB stick
put it on the file portion of my iPod (I think)
If that first one, the 5140, actually plays WMV files, that's quite a
trick. Somehow I remember that the fine print says the only "Windows
Media" files it plays are audio files -- WMA.

You need a program to 'Author' the DVD. there are many, some free some quite
expensive. A good all rounder that is not expensive is VSO ConvertXtoDVD. It
has a simple menu structure ( a background picture of your choice as long as
it is bmp, jpg or tiff - i grab a frame out of the movie file) and handles
mpeg, avi, rm and heaps of other file formants. It's a good introduction,
you could move on to the suggestions Ken and Jukka have made (they give
consistently good advice and I've picked up a lot from those 2)

I welcome a correction.

Premier ELements 2.0 (trial version) and it seems that should do it but
when I try to do it through that program the Burn icon is greyed out
(because of trial version?) Anyhow, what is good software to do this
with? THere are literally hundreds on the net to download; any
reccomendations appreciated.
Thanks, Bevin B.

The trial version of Elements does not allow you to burn to DVD. The full
program, plus many, many others will do it just fine.
You might want to check out the SW that came with your DVD burner (having read
down the thread, I see that you have a burner), and I'll be that it has Roxio,
or Nero bundled on its driver CD/DVD. Either should allow you to burn the MPG
to DVD-video to play on set top players. If not, there are probably freeware
DVD burning (Authoring) programs that will allow it.
Elements, Premiere Pro, Pinnacle Studio, Magix Movie Maker [correct name?]
and, IIRC, even M$ Movie Maker, will do this for you. If you are on MAC, then
you probably have iMovie, which will handle this for you. Just set the option
for DVD-video and all should work fine.

Why would you want SVCD or VCD? Unless you're dealing
with space limitations, and if you don't need fancy menus, just
burn the MPEG directly to a DVD and see if your home
player recognizes it. It probably will.
