I looked at the MediaMVP, but it appears the device is being phased out, as
there are very few places that have them in stock (Maybe they're just
coming out with a newer model?).

formats on my TV.

I'm wondering how good the DivX / XVid support is; I'm also wondering
if the unit is smart enough to integrate external subtitle (srt) files.

My main goal is to find some way of getting HD TV recordings to play on
my system; I don't have an HD video player.

You might want to visit the AVS forum at:

From what I've gathered, none of the current media players really do very
well with HD video, but you might research it a bit more.

I didn't need the HD capability, I just wanted to play standard MPEG2 video
from my computer over my home ethernet network. I bought a D-link DSM-520
as it was fairly inexpensive, and matched the rest of my stereo equipment.
It plays video perfectly, maintains sync, and has excellent picture
quality. The biggest problem is I can't fast forward (a common problem for
many media players it seems). I can start the fast forward, but there's no
way to stop it. So, it means I have to sit through commercials. Kind of a
pain, but I can live with it for now.

I did switch to the TVersity media server software as it works better than
the supplied Dlink server software.

I've played Xvid and MPEG4 (Nero recode) files on the D-link DSM-520. Both
play perfectly, in fact, the Xvid format will actually fast forward
propertly. Unfortunately, it takes a lot of time and processing power to
convert video to the Xvid format, which kind of defeats the advantages.

I capture video on my PC using a Hauppauge PVR-500MCE dual tuner TV card,
and the GBPVR software. Works great! Sure beats the old VCR and more
flexible than a TIVO (no subscription fees!).

Any anecdotal reviews are appreciated.
